“Moments after our first child was born, we were made aware that he did not have fully formed ears. Our heads began to spin. How is this possible? Wyatt was born with Microtia Atresia: A condition where the ears and ear canals do not fully form. Immediately our minds raced and we wondered if he would ever be able to hear our voices. Would he ever be able to hear us tell him how much we love him? Hear us sing lullabies? How would he learn to speak if he can’t hear?

Researching and finding an option for Wyatt

Wyatt, whose Baha System was covered by his insurance posed with his Baha Sound Processor on a Softband in a garden. We spent countless hours doing research, meeting specialists, working with insurance and trying to create the best plan of attack to ensure our little one could hear us. After working with our audiologist and doing our own research, it was determined that Wyatt was a candidate for a Cochlear bone conduction hearing solution. We knew that Cochlear was the brand we wanted to move forward with. The success stories, the technology and the customer service we received was fantastic. Their customer support team worked tirelessly with our insurance company to get Wyatt approved for the Cochlear Baha 6 Max Sound Processor.

Fast forward two months and Wyatt was able to do all these things that we spent the past few months in tears over. As soon as his Baha Sound Processor was turned on, his eyes lit up. The first words he heard were ‘I love you.’ It was the most powerful moment I have ever been a part of. Our sweet son could hear us! He began to smile, and the smiling hasn’t stopped since.

Wyatt’s development and progress

Wyatt, whose Baha System was covered by insurance, playing in a play castle with his Baha Sound Processor on a Softband. My husband and I have been able to watch our handsome boy thrive over the past two years. Wyatt has hit all of his 2 year milestones, leverages babysigns, and is developing on pace with all of his daycare classmates! Wyatt loves listening to music, listening for trains that pass by our home and watching big tractors and trucks! While we do worry about how other kids may treat him as he grows up, all the kids we have met so far agree that his hearing device is ‘so cool’. We joke that others (including us) will wish they had a built-in device that could stream1 phone calls, tv shows, and music!! Technology is AMAZING!

If we could go back in time, knowing what we know now: The power of Cochlear’s Baha System technology, we would have saved ourselves months of tears and worry. Our hope is that by sharing Wyatt’s story, that other parents can know that the Baha Sound Processor can transform you and your child’s life.

We are excited to watch Wyatt continue to learn, grow and teach others that being different is a good thing!”
