Being able to identify sounds around you is an important part of daily life; to connect with your physical environment and the sounds that bring you joy. Yet for many with hearing loss, this can be a challenge. This is why we’ve developed “My Sounds”, an interactive tool especially designed for your iPhone to help you identify sounds that matter to you.
My Sounds is the latest in a series of skill builder activities featured in our free mobile app, Cochlear™ CoPilot, developed by experts especially for adults with cochlear implants to build listening confidence.
It allows you to record sounds around your home to practice listening with the goal of being able to recognize sounds that are part of your everyday life or sounds that you love and miss.
To help you get started
The skill builder features a suggested checklist including typical household sounds like a microwave beeping and keys rattling.
In addition to helping identify important safety cues (alarms, sirens, car horns, and so on), you can record any sound that you want to reconnect with or want to be able to distinguish.
For example, when you’re walking with a friend outside, you might find it challenging to differentiate between background sounds like traffic, birds chirping and the wind rustling through trees.
Using the My Sounds skill builder, you can build a personal library of sounds that are specific to your life to help you familiarize, discriminate and identify individual sounds that are important to you. You can even name your own categories, such as “pet sounds,” “train station” and “kitchen.”
